Batarei prison mostly still had communal cells - dark rooms with 16 beds, where more than 30 people often spent time before the court. The solitary cells were rather an exception - hidden in the darkest recesses of the closed parts of the prison corridors, they remained largely untouched by vandal raids. So this photographed solitary cell is pretty much the same as it was when the last prisoner left here. The walls are full of drawings and posters, even the soup pots, cleaning cloths and brushes are still in their places. All of this has been decaying for years in a humid environment so that the room groans under plaster and mold. Like a heartache collected in the walls, which is now seeping out over time.
